Peter Thomas – Chief Executive Officer

Peter holds an MBA from Harvard University and a Bachelors of Economics and Bachelor of Science from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

Peter brings extensive experience in developing, financing and constructing large rail, port and mine projects to BBI. With a background in megaproject delivery, investment banking and finance, Peter spent 10 years with Fortescue Metals Group within the Executive and Projects teams. Starting as CFO (TPI), Peter then went on to serve as General Manager of Rail before transitioning to Fortescue’s Project team where he led the set up of Fortescue’s second mine at Christmas Creek. He then served as Project Director of Fortescue’s $5 billion port and rail expansion (just over half of the T155 Project). After transitioning away from Fortescue, Peter then went on to serve as Director of Projects for Adani to guide its $4 billion Carmichael Mine and Rail Project to the start of construction.

Prior to Fortescue, Peter was Senior Manager, Mergers & Acquisitions at Novartis in Switzerland from 2003-2004 and Vice President at Lehman Brothers from 1998-2002 in New York and London. Peter also worked at McKinsey & Company prior to those roles.

Peter joined BBI as its CEO in January, 2018.

Axel Cziesche – Vice President Project Development

Axel holds Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering degrees and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Project Management. 

Axel brings over 35 years project management and project delivery experience from concept through to commissioning in the power, mining and minerals processing industries.  His roles across his career have been varied and include roles such as Project Engineer, Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, Project Director and Client’s Representative.

Over the last 10 years and more recently Axel was a Project Director contracted to  WorleyParsons. The portfolio of projects managed ranged in value from $500m to $3 billion, primarily “Pit to Port” Projects in the Iron Ore Industry.

Axel has in the past worked for Rio Tinto, BHP, Western Mining (WMC) and was seconded to Vale to undertake a Value Optimisation study reducing Vale’s CAPEX down from $2.5 billion down to $2 billion, by optimising and restructuring their Sao’ Luis Port in Brazil.

Axel’ s projects expertise includes all aspects of Project Management, study management, development of Client PMO’s and MEGA project delivery i.e. ($3 billion) plus and Value Improvement Processes (VIP) and subsequent project CAPEX reductions.

Peter Jones – Vice President Engineering

Peter is a Chartered Professional Engineer with over thirty years’ of Engineering, Procurement & Construction (‘EPC’) experience in the heavy industry market. Mr Jones joined the company from UGL Limited where he was Group Manager Major Projects. Peter has previously managed feasibility studies including FEED for iron ore and pulp plants from feedstock to port. His technical experience is based in EPC delivery with particular skills in Project Controls, Estimating and Costs Control and management of multi-disciplinary project teams to process design, layouts, SMP and E&I design, equipment selection and procurement, tender documentation and construction supervision. Peter has worked on and delivered over $15 billion of projects in the past 10 years.

Angela Johnson – Vice President Community, Government Relations and Environment

Angela has over 14 years of experience in the resource sector. Angela previously worked for Atlas Iron where she held the role of General Manager Land Access, Heritage and Approvals. Prior to this she was Project Manager of the Balla Balla Project for Aurox Resources and previous to this spent 7 years in operational roles in northern Australia.

Shane Hartwig – CFO and Company Secretary

Shane Hartwig is a Certified Practicing Accountant and Chartered Company Secretary and holds a Bachelor of Business degree, majoring in Accounting and Taxation from Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. Shane is involved in the areas of initial public offerings, capital raisings, prospectus and information memorandum preparation and project management, company assessments and due diligence reviews, mergers and acquisitions and providing general corporate advice. Shane has over 20 years’ experience in the finance industry both nationally and internationally with exposure to both the debt and equity capital markets.
